Black Friday Mall Forecast
Although online shopping over the Thanksgiving weekend increased 17% year-over-year in 2015,2 nearly 102 million consumers still left their homes in search of the best in-store deals.3 The INRIX Thanksgiving Traffic Forecast has identified some of the busiest shopping centers across the U.S. and their anticipated congestion levels during the holiday weekend. INRIX found that suburban shopping centers will experience the highest travel times, up to almost 90% longer than normal.
“For consumers who want to spend the least amount of time driving to the malls, your best bet is to leave before 11:00 a.m.,” said Bob Pishue, senior economist at INRIX. “Shoppers should avoid midday and early afternoon when travel times could be more than double their normal length.”
9:25 p.m. Wednesday: Traffic backing up around Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport
Traffic around Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport was backed up Wednesday night.
About 9 p.m., the Arizona Department of Transportation advised anyone trying to reach the airport to allow extra time to do so due to traffic.
Sky Harbor on Wednesday morning warned travelers that travel volume was expected to be heavy from 6 to 11 p.m. and that people should use the Sky Train at 44th Street instead of driving.
People also can check security wait times at . As of 9:20 p.m., all waits were under 10 minutes.

Generally speaking, your best bet is to use the Whirlpool Bridge if all passengers have a NEXUS card. Second choice is usually the Rainbow bridge.
- Waits of up to 1 ½ hours are pretty typical at peak periods.
- When things get busy U.S. CBP may shift up to three of the commercial lanes to process cars.
Usually not much delay but all passengers must have a NEXUS card.
The Sunday after Thanksgiving is usually the Peace Bridge’s highest daily traffic count for November.
The number of car inspection lanes typically remains the same but border services may direct people to a secondary building for duty collection.
The hours of operation for the NEXUS lane has traditionally been extended by 3 hours to 3 a.m. to 9 p.m. Michigan-bound traffic tends to be heaviest on Sunday as Americans return home from holiday trips
4 p.m. Wednesday: No fires allowed in Maricopa County on Thanksgiving
Wood burning in residential fireplaces, chimneys, outdoor fire pits and similar outdoor fires is prohibited in Maricopa County this Thanksgiving due to elevated levels of smoke in the air, according to a release issued by the Maricopa County Air Quality Department on Wednesday.
“This includes individuals and businesses which have burn permits for open burning,” the county notes.
If you plan to roast anything over a fire this Thanksgiving, the county asks you to change plans and reduce harm to its air quality. Further restrictions include the use of leaf blowers and off-road vehicles.
The county asks residents to avoid waiting in long lines in the car Thursday, as this can contribute to poor air quality. Instead, park the vehicle and go inside.
