How to Secure Your Notes with Touch ID on iPhone and iPad

How to set your Notes password on iPhone and iPad

Setting up your password on Notes is like setting a HomeKit door lock for your home: It’s straightforward and you only have to worry about it once. You’ll automatically be asked to set a global password for securing the notes the first time you try to protect a note or the first time you visit the password section in the Notes settings. If you don’t want to wait, you can set it immediately by doing either of those things now.

To set a password in the Notes app:

  1. Launch Notes from your Home screen.
  2. Tap on an existing note or type a new note.
  3. Tap on the options menu on the top right corner.
  4. Tap Lock Note.

Touch ID and Face ID make the process much faster and more convenient, but also means someone could try and get you to touch the sensor when you’re sleeping or otherwise incapacitated. Most people will never have to worry about that, but if you’re James Bond or Natasha Romanov, keep it in mind.

8. SilentNotes

Pros

SilentNotes is another excellent choice for end-to-end encrypted notes. This free and open-source software (FOSS) offering has a committed developer with active project improvements.

The apps offer synchronization via 5 online storage services. User notebooks can stay updated between Windows computers and Android smartphone devices.

The WYSIWYG editor on both platforms is solid and among the better implementations I’ve seen especially for mobile.

Cons

There are no Mac, Linux, or iOS app versions expected. I do wish there was an export function that allowed for backup and restore as disaster recovery.

How SilentNotes Stacks Up

Users that primarily work on Windows and Android operating systems will find SilentNotes a good fit.

Set up your notes password

Before you can lock your notes, you need to create a password. Make sure to create a password that you can easily remember by giving yourself a password hint. If you access your iCloud notes on more than one Apple device, you’ll use the same notes password to lock and unlock all of them. If you forget your password, Apple can’t help you regain access to your locked notes, but you can create a new password to use for locking future notes.

You can create a password on your device in Settings or in the Notes app. After you lock a note, it’s automatically protected with your password on all your devices. If you use Face ID or Touch ID to unlock notes on your other devices, you must enter your password, then enable Face ID or Touch ID on the device you’re using.

Create a password in Settings

Go to Settings > Notes, then tap Password.  If you have multiple accounts, tap the account that you want to create a password for. Enter a password, then give yourself a password hint. If your device supports it, enable Face ID or Touch ID. Tap Done.
