How to Return your Verizon FiOS Router in 15 Easy Steps

How to Login to a Verizon Router

If you choose FIOS services, you can expect faster upload and download speeds than your average internet service. Depending on your equipment and bandwidth, FIOS devices produce signals about 40-60% faster than other high-speed internet items. You would expect the setup process to be more complicated, but it's not. The FIOS products have a very similar setup and login process as other devices.

If you choose to install your item at home, Verizon offers home delivery or pick up options from their stores. If you are switching providers, install your FIOS device and make sure you have internet service before turning off your old services.

How To Install your FIOS Router

1. Unpack your Verizon box and make sure you have all of the necessary parts.

You should have a coaxial cable, an Ethernet cord, a power adapter, and the device itself.

2. Find a good location for your device.

Try and pick a place in the center of your home to make sure you can access uninterrupted wireless internet anywhere in the house.

3. Disconnect all wireless devices, such as Smart TVs, gaming consoles, and tablets.

4. Insert one end of the coaxial cable to the port on the back of your device. Use the other end to connect to the coaxial wall outlet in your home.

If your services support more than 100 Mbps, connect an ethernet cable to the white ethernet port located behind the device. Insert the other end to the Ethernet wall jack in your home.

5. Connect the A/C power cord to the back of your device. Use the other end to plug into a wall outlet.

6. Your device will turn on as soon as you connect it to a power source. Your product will turn back on in about fifteen to twenty minutes.

The item may turn off and turn back on during this process. When you see solid green lights on the back of the device and solid white lights on the front, your item is turned on.

If you see solid or flashing red lights, there is something wrong with your connection. Unplug the cords from the device and attempt the setup process again. If you still see red lights, contact Verizon support.

Updating a Google router could not be easier — for better or worse. The system updates automatically, whether you want it to or not. You can get notifications about firmware updates, but you can’t decide whether to install one.

Generally speaking, this is a good thing, since you’ll never have to worry about your router being out-of-date. On the other hand, if Google were ever to introduce an exploitable update (this really does happen), you wouldn’t have any choice about applying it.

If you have a Google router, just try to stay abreast of security news and reassure yourself that automatic firmware updates are the safer option 99 percent of the time.

Step 3 Call Verizon technical support to switch your ONT from coax to Ethernet

Skip this step if your ONT is already connected to your router using Ethernet.

Call Verizon’s support number 1-800-VERIZON (1-800-837-4966) and follow the prompts to get to internet technical support. Once you get a real person on the line, let them know that you want to switch your ONT from coax to Ethernet so you can use your own router. When I called, the agent knew exactly what I needed and completed the request quickly (it will take a few minutes for the switch to go through). Your router should automatically pick up the Ethernet signal. While you have the agent on the line, verify this by unscrewing the coax cable from the router and make sure you still have internet access by opening a website on a laptop or phone (in airplane mode) connected to your WiFi network.

Some Netgear routers offer automatic firmware updates, but most don’t. Luckily, updating the router yourself should take only a few minutes. Just remember to do it regularly.

Go to a Web browser and enter either “” or “” Enter your username and password (“admin” and “password” for most models, if you haven’t changed them — although some older models don’t have usernames), then click on the Advanced tab on the top of the screen. Then select Administration from the left-hand menu, and Router Update.

From there, just click on the Check button, and your router will scour Netgear’s servers for an upgrade. And if your administrative credentials are still the factory defaults, change them as soon as you’re done.

Step 6 Connect and set up your new router

Take the Ethernet cable out of your Fios router and plug it into your new router’s Ethernet input jack (could be labeled input, WAN, or something else that should be specified in the setup instructions), then turn on your router. The router should automatically detect the incoming signal from your ONT box and continue with the setup process. The process will vary by manufacturer and model, and by whether you have a standalone router or a mesh WiFi system, though it should be very straightforward. If all is good, then you can take that old router back to Verizon.

How to Configure the Verizon Router

Your Verizon device comes with a pre-set with a default device username and password and default usernames and passwords for the internet connections. As soon as you log into your device for the first time, change these default values to keep your internet as secure as possible.

Changing the Item's Username/Password

Follow these steps to change the router's default username and password:

1. Log into your device with the default username/password.

These credentials are listed as the "Administration" credentials on the side of your device. If you don't see them, use the username/password "admin/password."

2. In the left panel on your screen, find the "Quick Links" section.

3. Click on the "Change Admin Password" link.

4. On the next screen, enter your updated username and password in the corresponding text boxes.

5. Click "Apply" to save your settings.
