Human Hair Structure
The very first thing to look at is how the hair strand is built.
Research has revealed that human hair is made from keratin, water, pigments, and lipids, of which the percentages are 80%, 10-15%, and 5-10% respectively. Each strand contains 3 layers: the cuticle, cortex, and medulla.
The cuticle forms the outer layer of the hair with overlapping cells, which work to prevent the inner layer from damage and control the water content of the fibers.
The cuticle layers envelop the middle part, which is called the cortex. This part carries approximately 90% of the total width and weight of human hair. Cortex determines the strength, elasticity, as well as the color of the hair due to housing the pigment (melanin) and elongated cells. The changes after dyeing, bleaching, or styling the hair all occur in this layer.
The innermost layer of a hair strand is medulla – the marrow of the hair. However, this layer does not appear in every hair type. It tends to appear in thick and coarse hair. In contrast, naturally thin hair does not have this kind of layer.
On the whole, the width of human hair is dependent on the two layers: cuticle and cortex.
Human hair is generally characterized by three types. The first is called lanugo and only grows on human fetuses. They form a whole body of fine hair at 12 weeks of age and then shed it when they are about 40 weeks old. The next type is called vellus and can be hard to see. This hair is only 2 cm long and is very thin and pale. Vellus hair grows on the chest and back and is often called “peach fuzz.” The most common type of human hair is called terminal hair, which is the hair on your head and body.

Hair Fall In Women Vs Men

How thick is a human hair in inches?
Typically, the thickness of hair strands ranges from 1/1500 to 1/500 of an inch in diameter. the thickness is also affected by the properties of the natural locks. For instance, someone with a blonde head has thinnest strands. Because the strands don’t have a middle layer as black hair does. On the contrary, dark hair is the thickest and maybe the coarsest hair. Additionally, temperature and humidity affect the strand thickness.
How Much Hair Falling Out Is Too Much?
Losing about 100 hair strands a day or 700 per week is classed under normal hair fall. Bald spots, patches and clumps of hair falling out can indicate medical conditions ranging from thyroid, androgenetic alopecia to telogen effluvium .

The average thickness of the human hair
The diameter of a human hair does not have a standard value because each people have different thickness of human hair. The genetic makeup can cause the width of your hair to differ from that of other people. Notably, the color of the hair is also a big factor.
Black hair is thicker than is red hair. Besides, the weather or climate can also affect the diameter of a hair strand. As the weather becomes warmer, the diameter of body hair rise. Age is another factor. Babies and young children have more beautiful hair than adults.
When a person grows up, their hair becomes thicker and stronger. Another point is that the closer to the root of the hair, the thicker a strand of hair would be.
Primarily, our genetic is the most factor decides the average thickness of human hair whether we have thick or thin hair. Europeans consider hair with a diameter of 0.04 to 0.06 mm as thin, hair with a diameter between 0.06 and 0.08 mm as average, and hair with a diameter between 0.08 and 0.1 mm as thick.
By comparison with European hair, Asian hair is especially thicker. The average diameter of Asian hair is 0.08 to 0.12 mm. Besides, European hair has a somewhat elliptical shape, while Asian hair is rounded with more elastic. (1mm is equivalent to 0.039’’, the example about four-hundredths of an inch.) In Brian Ley research,1999, the thickness of human hair in meters to range from 17 to 181 µm (millionths of a meter).
How to measure the average thickness of human hair?
Have you ever wonder how the scientists have measured the size of a hair strand? Obviously, you cannot use a normal ruler to record it. To do this examination, they have made use of the laser pointer.
Simply speaking, they will shine the laser light onto the wall of a dark room, making sure it passes through the hair strand sample. The hair would diffract the laser light. By measuring the size of the scatter that the diffractions cause, they were able to measure the width of the hair strands they are testing.
There will also be an equation in which they could calculate the exact result of Remy human hair size.
We won’t talk into this problem deeper, as it involves scientific terminologies as well as specialized knowledge, which we believe normal people won’t comprehend no matter how many times you try to read.
Many external substances can greatly affect the appearance of human hair, no matter what shape it is or what your genes have programmed it to do. Bad nutrition, harsh conditioners, dyes and constant use or curling irons can damage the hair’s original condition.
