Does Drinking Alcohol Actually Kill Off Your Sore Throat Germs? Science Explains

1. Sip warm water with lemon and honey

Any warm beverage can help soothe a sore throat. “Hot water on its own is soothing and can help provide relief for sore throat, cough, and runny nose,” says Amy Gorin, MS, RDN, a registered dietitian in the New York City area. 

Drinking warm lemon water may be especially useful when you have a sore throat due to an illness, as it can add a small extra dose of vitamin C to your diet. Vitamin C can boost your immune system and may even help you overcome colds. 

Adding honey to your lemon water may also treat a sore throat and cough. For example, a small 2017 study found that honey can help speed up the recovery of a sore throat due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.

3. Artificial Sweeteners

Not only will cutting sugar from your diet help your body heal faster, eliminating artificial sweeteners is beneficial as well. These sweeteners such as aspartame can spike your blood sugar and feed a Candida infection (9). 7. Garlic and Onions

These sulfur containing compounds belonging to the Allium group are especially beneficial to combating a sore throat. The use of these flowering plants for medical practices have been documented in Egyptian, Roman, Chinese, Greek and Indian texts for more than 4,000 years (33).

Both garlic and onion contain antimicrobial properties along with the ability to destroy fungus and viruses. Allicin is the predominant sulfur compound richly contained in garlic and onions. This compound destroys bacteria, viruses and fungi. (13, 14)

If you feel a sore throat developing, consider eating a clove of crushed raw garlic daily for its potent health properties.

Is Kombucha good for singers?  

Kombucha is a sweet but acidic strain of black or green tea that’s produced from fermentation. The process of fermentation involves sugar breaking down into alcohol and carbon dioxide, so kombucha tea contains traces of alcohol. 

Kombucha only has 0.5% alcohol per serving; a volume so small it is commercially labelled as a non-alcoholic drink. As the traces of alcohol are so minimal, this shouldn’t affect your voice as a singer.  

Though the alcohol in kombucha won’t hamper your vocals, there are other qualities of green tea that might. The caffeine in green tea can dehydrate your vocal cords and the amino acids in kombucha can sometimes cause headaches. Kombucha packs lots of great health benefits so is a good, healthy drink to enjoy on the days you’re not due to perform.

Prolongs sickness

Alcohol’s effect on your immune system is one reason to avoid drinking while sick. Drinking alcohol can weaken your body’s ability to fight off infection.1 A weakened immune system can make your body more susceptible to getting sick and slow down recovery.2

Another way that drinking alcohol while sick can prolong your recovery is by interrupting your sleep. Your body needs rest to recover from sickness.3 Getting enough sleep is important to feeling better, but drinking alcohol can impair your sleep in a number of ways.4 A glass of wine might help you fall asleep, but alcohol is disruptive to getting a good night’s rest. Alcohol disrupts REM sleep, the most restorative type of sleep, which can leave you feeling groggy in the morning.4 It also turns on a sleep pattern called alpha activity, which keeps your body from getting the deep sleep it needs.4 Not getting enough sleep can make your cold or flu symptoms worse while also prolonging the recovery process.

Sore throats are common, especially during cold and flu season. Therefore, finding ways to soothe your throat at home while providing your body with the nutrients it needs to fight an infection is important. Some great drink options for sore throats include hot tea or broth, warm water with lemon and honey, or antioxidant-rich smoothies.
